Cracks that are horizontal or vertical are generally a sign of the plaster drying or shrinking. If you see a crack in plaster or drywall, the first thing you need to do is see which direction it runs in.
Inspect the position of the crack after measuring its width. Cracks less than 1/8-inch thick are considered stress cracks and are harmless, while cracks 1/4-inch wide and larger are often more serious. Typically, wider cracks signify more serious issues than thinner cracks.
